From the recording On My Way

Written for a friend of mine who attempted suicide, this song uses deafness as a metaphor for life's apparent meaninglessness. The deaf person is invited to sense the music instead of assuming that there is none left for her.

When my friend heard the song, she thought it was sweet that I had written a song about a deaf person, not knowing it was really about her.

Lyrics

Why you look so down?
So maybe you can't hear
But if you try and open up your soul
There may be no sound but if you listen loud and clear
You learn that you still play a leading role

Why do you stop living?
You say a part of you has died
Well maybe it's really been here all this time
There's plenty left for giving, look deep down inside
In a word, in a smile, in a rhyme

Just sense the music
When you see the landscape, feel the rain,
and touch the hand of a friend
Sense the music
When you walk outside and you breathe the autumn wind

Now the world won't treat you nicer
You see the world is just a rock
And, baby, if you run you're gonna fall
Maybe it'd be wiser to get up and learn to walk
It really isn't hard to do at all

One day you will begin to find your senses open wide
Silent music that you tasted in the salt
Of the tear that trickled into your mouth when you had cried
And cried, baby, just when you thought

There was no more music,
But then you saw the landscape, felt the rain,
and touched the hand of a friend
Sensed the music
When you walked outside and you breathed the autumn wind

Just sense the music
When you see the landscape, feel the Son
and touch the hand of a friend
Sense the music
When you walk outside and you breathe the autumn wind

And you win
